Yesterday I saw an advert in London Bridge for the new 3 phone saying I could now get a feed of what my Facebook friends are up to on (not even ‘status updates’, but ‘feed’). Today, my smoothie is talking to me about posting tweets. Though I do feel a bit like I’m consuming breakfast two-point-oh right now, it’s interesting to note what technical terms make their way the vernacular, and how quickly this changes.
It points to one of the reasons interface copy needs to be continually updated to map to people’s mental models of what technology does. Explaining scrobbling, for instance is something we’ve rewritten countless times over the last three years.
